New research shows Millennial candidates sweep into Congress, State Legislatures across the country

WASHINGTON — Following the widespread certification of election results around the country, the Millennial Action Project (MAP) released all-new research on a nationwide movement to elect millennials to Congress and state legislatures.

The Millennial Action Project can now confirm that the 117th Congress will see the largest cohort of young Americans ever. As of January, 81 U.S. representatives will be 45 or younger, including 23 freshmen and 58 incumbents from both parties.

State legislatures next year will have a whopping 1,641 millennial representatives, out of 7,383 total state seats. This year’s elections saw 340 new millennial candidates elected to state office, including the first millennial Libertarian in Wyoming, Marshall Burt, and the country’s first openly-nonbinary state representative, Mauree Turner of Oklahoma.

“Whether for Congress or state legislatures, millennials are running for office like never before,” said Steven Olikara, Founder and CEO of MAP. “This research confirms that millennials aren’t just running for office, they’re winning.”

Nowhere proves that theory better than Florida and New Hampshire. Each state has seen their legislature gain 19 new millennial representatives. From the inroads made in 2018 to the progress cemented in this year’s election, millennial political power—and a whole new generation of leadership—continues to grow up and down the ballot in red, blue, and purple states across the country.
