More young members is a sign of more collaborative governance on the way.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Millennial Action Project (MAP) announces new data – 89 millennials ages 45 or younger and 1 Gen Zer are being sworn in as Members of Congress in the 118th Congress. That’s a 40% increase in youth representation compared to the previous 66 millennial members ages 45 and younger in the 117th. In the 118th, 56 are incumbent members while the other 34 are newly-elected members.

This surge in young people sworn in to public office is an encouraging sign for Americans hoping for a fresh, more collaborative approach to governing. Despite common misconceptions about the partisanship of rising generations, Members of Congress 45 years old or younger scored as more bipartisan than their older peers for the last three Congresses in a row. 

“Young elected officials inherently understand the unique set of challenges faced by rising generations, from college affordability to criminal justice reform,” said Layla Zaidane, President and CEO of Millennial Action Project. “We need leaders who can create bold coalitions to unlock creative solutions. I have no doubt the members of the 118th Congress can be these kinds of action-oriented, collaborative leaders. MAP’s bipartisan Congressional Future Caucus is open to all young members looking to work with their colleagues across the aisle.
