New Gen Z caucus renews push to organize at VT Statehouse

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – An organization trying to attract younger state lawmakers is renewing a push to break down partisan walls at the Statehouse.
About 38 out of 180 lawmakers identify as Gen Z or millennials in the Vermont Legislature. A handful of lawmakers Tuesday unveiled the Vermont Future Caucus, part of a national organization that claims they don’t push any national policy agendas but instead aims to give young people the tools to get involved in politics.
“What we’re hoping to see is 1,000 points of light across the country of people working together and that inspiring citizens who vote for lawmakers who govern and get results,” said the national group’s Reed Howard.
He says they want to find ways to cooperate on criminal justice reform so they are introducing a bill that would reduce sentencing times if inmates seek educational programming behind bars.
The caucus’ first meeting at the Statehouse is this Wednesday.
