(BATON ROUGE, LA) Today, October 12, Representatives Edward James (D-101) and Julie Emerson (R-39) were named the new Co-Chairs of the Louisiana State Future Caucus, a caucus comprised of state legislators under age 45. The announcement is part of a nation-wide movement in state houses across the country where young legislators are seeking to find common ground and create meaningful progress through government institutions. With the launch, Louisiana officially joins Millennial Action Project’s national State Future Caucus Network.

Louisiana’s Future Caucus will be part of the Millennial Action Project’s national effort to support young elected officials as they work to break through partisan gridlock and reestablish political cooperation.

Despite the national attention directed at dysfunction and gridlock in government, there is a counter-movement underway – led by Millennials – that seeks to disrupt the status quo in government. Millennial Action Project hopes that as additional younger state legislators course a path of bipartisanship and cooperation, they will be able to bring this perspective to Washington. Currently, 15 millennial members of Congress began their legislative careers in state houses.

“Millennial Action Project is thrilled to expand its State Future Caucus network in the South, with Louisiana today joining Alabama, Florida and Georgia. It’s encouraging that Reps. James and Emerson are committed to working together, across party lines, to make sure that our voices are heard at the state capitol,” said Steven Olikara, Co-Founder and President of Millennial Action Project. “Millennials have the power to shape the future of politics in our country, if today is any indication, we have a bright future ahead of us.”

“I’m honored to serve as a Co-Chair of the Louisiana Future Caucus and with my colleagues, support the work of the Millennial Action Project as we work to find new and innovative ways to tackle political issues that are important to younger generations,” added Rep. James.
