Rutgers University: Layla Zaidane and Kansas Rep. Rui Xu speak at the Eagleton Institute of Politics

Event date: October 15, 2021

  • Friday, October 15, 2021 6:00 PM  –  7:00 PM

On Friday, October 15th, MAP President & CEO, Layla Zaidane and Kansas Future Caucus Co-Chair, Rep. Rui Xu spoke to students of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University’s Legislative Policymaking class. Rep. Xu is a Millennial state representative in the Kansas House of Representatives. He was first elected in 2018.

During the panel, Zaidane and Xu discussed MAP’s mission and theory of change, as well as the benefits of a Future Caucus. Rep. Xu gave examples of that theory of change in action on the ground in Kansas. Zaidane noted that a Future Caucus offers significant value to a young legislator — from connecting them with people to co-sponsor a bill, to helping the young legislator position themself as a bipartisan legislator. Rep. Xu personally testified to this, recalling how the Kansas Future Caucus helped him achieve his legislative goals with the Home Buyers Saving Account (KS HB-2187).

Students, many of whom intern on both sides of the aisle in the New Jersey Assembly, asked about legislative successes, the variety of Future Caucuses, and how to remove toxic dialogue from our political process.

These students exemplify MAP’s commitment to building a movement that prioritizes opportunity and improvement over partisanship. If you want to have MAP come to your college campus, contact us.
