MAP’s Steven Olikara on DACA Termination

In response to the Trump administration announcement of the termination of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), Steven Olikara released the following statement:

“This week’s decision to end DACA unnecessarily stokes fear and upends the lives of 800,000 young men and women covered under the program. It also underscores a deeper problem – the inability of Congress in recent years to reach a bipartisan, long-term solution to this issue. We hope Congress now takes this opportunity to do the right thing: enact a law protecting these young people and set the stage for further bipartisan immigration reform. Fortunately, we have already seen glimmers of hope from millennial members of Congress, part of the Future Caucus, who are bridging the partisan divide and proposing viable solutions. 

Today we join the chorus of voices across the nation, across party lines, and across generations asking Congress to act. At best, we hope the administration’s move to end DACA spurs action in Congress to reach a politically sustainable solution to this issue, so Dreamers aren’t stuck in the crosshairs of partisanship. 

However, we know that the American public has lost confidence in Congress. That’s why Millennial Action Project’s Future Caucus and other efforts to fix Congress are so crucial in this moment — together, we can bolster the capacity of this institution to function and revitalize the American Dream for a new generation.”
