Lawmakers Ponder Millennial Challenge in Framingham

State Sen. Eric Lesser, a Longmeadow Democrat who moderated the panel, said the lack of engagement in politics by members of his generation is alarming, particularly in state and local elections. At the same time, the level of civic participation and community service by young people is at an all-time high, Lesser said, suggesting millennials are engaged, but not with government.
FRAMINGHAM — Some of the youngest members of the state Legislature shared their insights Friday into the concerns of their generation at a forum hosted by the League of Women Voters.
Three freshmen lawmakers who took office in January and a state senator who was sworn in last year discussed the obstacles they faced winning election as youthful politicians.
Speaking at the Sheraton in Framingham, the panelists — all in their 20s or 30s — also talked about the challenge of engaging millennials in politics, a problem each encountered while campaigning last year.
