Future Caucus Launches National Task Force to Guide State AI Policy

July 21, 2025

Cross-partisan task force of Gen Z and millennial lawmakers will lead on smart, ethical AI governance at the state level

WASHINGTON — Future Caucus today announced the launch of the National Task Force on State AI Policy, a cross-partisan initiative to equip Gen Z and millennial state lawmakers to lead the country’s response to artificial intelligence. Co-chaired by Rep. Monique Priestley, D-Vt., and Rep. Doug Fiefia, R-Utah, the task force brings together a politically diverse coalition of young legislators to ensure that AI policy is guided by effective governance, not partisan gridlock.

Artificial intelligence is already transforming the most urgent and complex policy areas facing the country, from jobs and education to public safety, democracy and the economy. But in too many statehouses, lawmakers are being asked to make high-stakes decisions without the resources or tools to do so. This new task force will serve as a national brain trust for responsible AI governance at the state level.

“We’re building the kind of space where lawmakers can get informed and generate solutions to the tech policies impacting their constituents,” said Priestley, who authored Vermont’s nationally recognized AI legislation and serves on the National Conference of State Legislatures’ Task Force on Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Privacy. “This is about translating AI into real-world governance with clarity, creativity and collaboration.”

The task force will connect lawmakers with expert voices in industry, academia and civil society; host public hearings and confidential briefings; and produce a first-of-its-kind Bipartisan State AI Policy Memo to guide policymaking across the country. Members will also advise on Future Caucus’ AI-related programming, including influencer engagement and Innovation Lab initiatives.

“This is a defining moment,” said Fiefia, who previously worked at Google and authored Utah’s groundbreaking social media data control law. “We can’t afford to let AI policy be divided by party or decided by default. As younger lawmakers, we have a unique opportunity to lead with balance and foresight.”

The National Task Force on State AI Policy is the latest initiative from Future Caucus, a nonpartisan nonprofit that empowers young elected leaders to bridge the partisan divide and advance collaborative governance. In an environment where AI debates are often either highly polarized or overly technical, the Task Force will offer lawmakers — and the public — a pragmatic, principled path forward.
