On July 1, Alabama will become the 45th state to allow ridesharing companies, like Uber and Lyft, to operate statewide. This bipartisan effort was led by Alabama Future Caucus member Representative David Faulkner, alongside state Senator Bobby Singleton, and signed into law by Governor Kay Ivey in March.
Previously, ridesharing companies were only allowed to operate in approved, select cities, limiting Alabamians’ transportation and economic opportunities. Under this new statewide legislation, people in rural and suburban areas will now be able to participate in the ridesharing industry, increasing access to affordable transportation as well as jobs. Since the announcement, Lyft and Uber have announced that they will be expanding throughout Alabama, providing tens of thousands of jobs and new transportation options.
Rep. Faulkner stated, “One of my primary responsibilities in the Alabama House is to ensure that all Alabama residents have access to safe, reliable, and efficient methods of transportation. The legislation that I and Senator Singleton carried, and that Governor Ivey signed, does just that.”
This effort is a continuation of similar efforts led by Future Caucus members across the country, including Colorado’s first-ever state ridesharing legislation.
