WASHINGTON — This week, the Millennial Action Project, the largest nonpartisan organization of millennial elected officials in the U.S., awarded young state lawmakers from across the country for their work to bridge partisan divides in American politics.
The third annual Rising Star Award, for lawmakers who have embodied MAP’s mission to transcend political tribalism through their public service, was awarded to Mississippi State Rep. Jeramey Anderson (D) and Oregon State Rep. David Brock Smith (R). The inaugural Cherisse Eatmon Collective Impact Award, for a State Future Caucus that best embodies an unwavering commitment to bipartisan cooperation and generational change in their state, was presented to the Iowa Future Caucus. The bicameral, bipartisan Iowa Future Caucus is led by Sen. Zach Nunn (R), Sen. Zach Wahls (D), Rep. Joe Mitchell (R), and Rep. Lindsay James (D).
“Every year things get a little better,” said former Congressman Carlos Curbelo, the keynote speaker for the virtual event. “That’s thanks to [the Millennial Action Project, who is] dedicating a lot of time and resources to giving elected officials — especially younger elected officials — the opportunity to convene, to gather, and to share in a constructive way that builds trust, relationships, and yields better outcomes. So thank you.”
As we prepare to enter the new year, and the new legislative sessions that will be gaveled in across the country this January, these lawmakers, as well as the 1,500 other State Future Caucus Network members, will continue to flip our partisan paradigm on its head. These are the leaders who are strengthening our political system, and their collective impact has the power to shape our country in 2021 and beyond.
