Editorial: Millennials Taking Over the Future

The Lincoln Journal Star in Lincoln, NE published an editorial examining the state of the millennial generation in Nebraska and around the country. In addition to examining the realities many millennials face in accessing the workforce, the editorial highlights the efforts of Next Generation Nebraska, a bipartisan group of young legislators working through the Nebraska legislature to address the needs of the state’s young people. Next Generation Nebraska is affiliated with MAP’s State Network, and recently became the 15th state where young legislators have joined the movement.

“In Nebraska the millennial cohort is at 23.5 percent of the population, about the same size as it is nationally, according to the blog “Young Adults Then and Now” at the U.S. Census Bureau.

In one respect Nebraska’s millennials are a step ahead of their counterparts in other states. Eleven of the 49 members of the Nebraska Legislature are millennials, which is believed to be the highest percentage in the country. They have banded together in a bipartisan group known as Next Generation Nebraska.

Led by Sens. Adam Morfeld, 31, of Lincoln, and Brett Lindstrom, 35, of Omaha, the group plans to listen to young professional groups on ways to attract and retain more young people in Nebraska.

Editorial, 1/21: Millennials taking over the future

For generations it has been commonly assumed in America that children would be better off financially than their parents. That’s no longer true, as a story in the Journal Star reported last week.
