The first meetings of MAP’s Criminal Justice Advisory Council were held on Thursday, May 26th, and Thursday, June 23rd. These convenings were virtual, over Zoom, with a focus on juvenile justice reform. The meetings were led by the two CJRAC co-chairs, Rep. Daniel Pae (R-OK) and Rep. Jamie Scott (D-AR), while attendees consisted of CJRAC members, along with issue-area experts on juvenile justice policy.
May 26th marked the inaugural convening of the CJRAC. Featuring a discussion with Michael Mendoza, Director of Advocacy at the Anti-Recidivism Coalition and James Dold, CEO & Founder of Human Rights for Kids. The conversation, What’s Good for the Goose: Translating Progress in the Criminal Justice System at Large to Youth in the System, focused on sentencing reform, bail reform, and anti-recidivism efforts for juveniles. These policies, which have seen increased support for the adult criminal justice system, have specific and granular effects when applied to the juvenile justice system.
Then on June 23rd, the second meeting of the CJRAC was held. The meeting titled, Kids in the System: Creating New Expectations for Rehabilitation, focused on issues tailored to juvenile justice such as Miranda rights for juveniles, youth detention facilities, and the role of parents in the prison system. The issue-area experts for this meeting were Amy Borror, Justice Systems Manager at The Gault Center, and Lisa Macaluso, owner of Macaluso & Associates, LLC.
Additional programming for the CJRAC is planned for the coming months. Upcoming topics include women’s issues in the justice system and efforts to combat substance abuse. For further questions about the CJRAC’s past and future programming, please contact Sam Sherwood at [email protected].
