“The future of our democracy is under serious threat when young, passionate leaders like Rep. Gonzalez don’t see a place for themselves within it.”

WASHINGTON, DC On September 16, 2021, Rep. Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH-16) announced that he will not seek re-election in 2022. Millennial Action Project (MAP) President & CEO Layla Zaidane released the following statement regarding this announcement:

“The future of our democracy is under serious threat when principled, young, passionate, leaders like Rep. Gonzalez don’t see a place for themselves within it.

“Rep. Gonzalez proudly served as Co-Chair of MAP’s Congressional Future Caucus during the 116th Congress. His leadership paved the way for better problem-solving on Capitol Hill, as he worked tirelessly to tackle a culture of toxic partisanship.

“Today’s toxic politics are creating a generation of politically homeless Americans and pushing away the types of principled, solutions-oriented people we need most in this moment. Our generation wants a system that welcomes a diversity of people and perspectives — and we must do better to deliver on that vision. Rep. Gonzalez led the Future Caucus in creating the space to do just that, and his legacy tackling political polarization will endure.

“We are thankful for Rep. Gonzalez’s service in the Future Caucus and beyond. We wish him and his family the very best, and look forward to his continued leadership in building a healthier American democracy.”
