Arkansas adopts Millennial Action Project

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KATV) — Millennials (anyone between the ages of 18 to 35) are the largest demographic in Arkansas, and according to the Millennial Action Project, millennials make up most of the voters in the state.

But the group hopes to be the voice for millennials when it comes to lawmaking.

On Thursday, Arkansas became the 20th state to join the Millennial Action Project, as the Arkansas Future Caucus was born.

It’s a bipartisan group aimed at getting millennials involved in lawmaking, but also acting as a voice for young people in our country. And in our nation’s rather turbulent political climate, you’d think more and more people are swaying away from politics.

But that’s not the case, according to Steven Olikara, the president and founder of the Millennial Action Project.

“Millennials are very idealistic. We have the highest levels of service participation in the country, but we have the least trust and confidence in government. That’s the gap that we have to close,” Olikara said.

He adds that student debt, a problem facing the millennial generation, is just one of many topics the caucus focuses on.

“We’ve been putting forth bipartisan solutions on that. Entrepreneurship has [also] been a big issue, and also just reinventing government, to bring our governing intuitions into the digital age, into the 21st century,” Olikara added.

The Millennial Action Project still has about 30 states to go as far as getting young lawmakers involved in “Future Caucuses”. The group plans to have Future Caucuses in all 50 states by the year 2020.
