Celebrating A New Generation of Leadership in Kansas

January 28, 2025

The Kansas Future Caucus is all about relationships — because when you know someone as a person, not just their political party, everything changes. They’ve made it a priority to build connections that go deeper than just the bills they’re debating or the votes they’re casting.

This year, they kicked off the session with a lunch designed to bring everyone together —not to dive straight into policy, but to talk, laugh, and share a meal. It’s no wonder this group is known for its ability to bring some of the most liberal and conservative members of the legislature into the same room, not just as colleagues but as collaborators. It’s why the Obama Foundation’s Democracy Forum spotlighted their Republican and Democrat co-chairs as a main stage feature this year.

That focus on relationships is what sets this caucus apart. By getting to know each other as people first, they’re able to tackle tough issues like housing and childcare with a sense of shared purpose. It’s not about compromising values — it’s about understanding where everyone is coming from and finding ways to work together for Kansans.

This team is uniquely positioned for impact, with co-chairs Rep. Brandon Woodard stepping into the influential role of House Minority Leader and Sen. Tory Blew bringing fresh perspectives from her transition from the House to the Senate.

In a recent legislative session, the caucus achieved a significant milestone by passing a first-time homebuyer tax credit, demonstrating their ability to collaborate on innovative solutions. Looking ahead, the caucus has big plans. Housing remains a central focus, as it impacts all Kansans and is especially critical for younger generations. By addressing barriers such as zoning laws and increasing the number of homes built, the caucus hopes to create bipartisan solutions that enhance affordability and access.

After their lunch, they wrapped up the day at Iron Rail Brewing, a local Topeka favorite, where the conversations continued, this time over craft beer and a little less formality. These moments outside the House and Senate chambers are what make the Kansas Future Caucus so special — they know that policy solutions don’t just happen during debates; they happen when people take the time to connect, listen, and imagine a better future together.
