Young Policymakers Engage Madison’s Legacy at the National Archives

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Millennial Action Project along with James Madison’s Montpelier will host Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), Congressman Will Hurd (R-TX) , political commentator Mary Katharine Ham, and Millennial Action Project President and Co-Founder Steven Olikara for a Constitution Day event that poses an age-old question to the Millennial generation: What does the Constitution mean to you?

“This is a great time to check in with the people, especially young people, about their own roles in America’s conversation about rights and government,” said Montpelier Vice President Doug Smith. “The rising generation has a compelling message for us about where our democracy is going and people need to hear it.”

The Ninth Annual State of the Constitution Lecture focuses on young leaders in the areas of policy, governance, and citizen engagement who are shaping America’s future as a constitutional democracy.

Smith will moderate a discussion focused on James Madison’s legacy, which created the blueprint for our participatory democracy, while also learning how a dynamic group of young leaders wrestles with their responsibilities in today’s government.

“There’s an assumption that people of my generation are apathetic,” said Millennial Action Project President and Co-Founder Steven Olikara. “My experience, however, is that we care passionately about our rights and understand we must revitalize our democracy in order to propel the nation forward.”

Mary Katharine Ham is a regular on Bill O’Reilly’s Fox News Channel show and a guest co-host of The View who defines her perspective as a “fiscal and security-conscious conservative.”

The panelists were chosen for their diverse perspectives and significant leadership contributions in the political sphere.

Following the discussion, the Millennial Action Project celebrates its Second Anniversary with a reception hosting members of the Congressional Future Caucus, including Co-Chairs Representatives Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) and Will Hurd (R-TX), and other honored guests.

Live stream of event is available at: ustream.tv/usnationalarchives.

The event is co-sponsored by the Robert H. Smith Center for the Constitution at James Madison’s Montpelier, National Archives, and the Millennial Action Project.

The Millennial Action Project (MAP) is a national, nonpartisan organization dedicated to activating millennial policy makers to cooperatively govern our country. In 2013, MAP organized the nation’s first and only caucus for young members of Congress, the “Congressional Future Caucus,” to forge pragmatic cooperation on future-oriented challenges. MAP also scaled this model into state legislatures, each with a Future Caucus consisting of young, high-potential legislators. The national Advisory Board includes Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr., Governor Jennifer Granholm, The Honorable Olympia Snowe and former U.S. Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra.
